Yahoo and Hotmail are also targeted by spear phishing hackers

INTERNET GIANT Google's Gmail service hasn't been the only email provider to get hit with a successful phishing campaign against high-profile accounts, as Hotmail and Yahoo Mail have also come under attack.
In a blog post, Trend Micro senior threat researcher Nart Villeneuve said Hotmail and Yahoo Mail have also been targeted with separate but similar attacks. Like in the case of Gmail, hackers were looking to gain access to webmail accounts in order to monitor communications, as well as conduct future attacks.
Villeneuve said that in addition to spear phishing, hackers were also looking at webmail vulnerabilities as good ways to target political activists on Gmail. The attacks had some similarities to an attack Trend Micro discovered that tried to target Hotmail services in Taiwan.
He also said that Trend Micro alerted Yahoo to an attack where hackers were trying to steal user cookies in order to access email accounts. That effort failed, but it showed that Yahoo Mail users weren't safe either.
He said, "These attacks can be difficult to defend against because these often appear to come from recognizable sources. However, there are some clues that can help identify phishing email messages."
"There are generally spelling and grammatical errors present in the messages that help indicate that it did not originate from the expected source."
